CAS president holds talks with former Japanese S&T Minister
2006/06/02

CAS President LU Yongxiang met with Mr. Koji Omi, Member of Japan's House of Representatives, former Minister of State for Science and Technology Policy and Chairman of the Science and Technology in Society Forum (STS Forum) and his delegation on May 18 in Beijing.

STS Forum provides a platform for heavyweights from the international political, S&T and business circles to explore major issues commonly faced by the people across the world from S&T aspect. It aims to gradually construct a human resources network to address the issues using S&T. President Lu is one of the initiators of the forum and serves as a council member.

Mr. Koji Omi expressed appreciation for the support President Lu has rendered to STS forum over the past years, and invited more Chinese representatives to attend its third annual conference to be held in Kyoto, Japan from Sept. 10 to 12, 2006. He gave a brief account of the preparatory work for the conference.

President Lu spoke positively of the Forum. He said it helped the attendees from various countries to deliberate issues of coordination among peoples, S&T and nature at the macro-level strategic level and reach mutual understanding and consensus. He would like to recommend and support participants from the Chinese S&T community to attend the conference.

Lu indicated that a single country is unable to deal with such issues facing the whole human race as energy, environment, infectious diseases and internet security. It needs well-concerted efforts among various countries. STS Forum is not only beneficial to Japan and China, but also to the whole world; it is not only important to advanced countries, but also to developing ones. He suggested that politicians with profound understanding of, and important influence on, S&T issues be invited to the conference, and that the Forum Council have more representatives from developing countries in order to cope effectively with issues there.

Mr. Koji Omi and his delegation came to visit China at the invitation of the Ministry of Science and Technology. They also visited Shanghai.
